“Hindu Refugees Excluded From NRC will be Given Indian Citizenship”: Amit Shah

Guwahati, July 3, 2019:

Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the Lok Sabha session announced that Hindu refugees will not have to worry even if their names are not included in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The minister further added that the people whose names have not been included in the NRC will be given Indian citizenship. Moreover, the Central Government is keen to amend the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to give citizenship to the Hindu refugees.

It was also mentioned by Amit Shah that those identified as foreigners by the tribunals of the state will be sent away. He added, “After Assam, the drafting of NRC will be carried out in different states of the country in phase-wise proceedings.”

It is to be mentioned that the Government's promise towards allotment of citizenship to the Hindu-Bangladeshi people in the state has created a tense situation among the people of Assam. People have been protesting against the Bill from the past year. However, the Central Government is adamant over the amendment of the Bill.

Meanwhile, there have allegations of discrepancies in the NRC updation process. The Central Government has even declared that nearly 60,000 people have been declared 'foreigners' in the state. Moreover, many of the minority communities have alleged that there is a conspiracy to declare them as 'foreigners' in their own lands.
