In a shocking incident, the Latasil police station registered a suo-moto case against noted Assamese intellectual Dr. Hiren Gohain over charges of Secession for his recent remarks supporting sovereignty in Assam but failed to take action against Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) MP Biswajit Daimary who in July last year had made similar statements.

Interestingly, Daimary in July last year went all out in Rajya Sabha voicing his concerns over the issue of NRC. An angry Daimary, who was not allowed to put forward his concerns properly, asked the house for a sovereign Assam and to leave North East independently on the floor of the Rajya Sabha.
It is noteworthy that an MP goes on to slam the house members asking for sovereign Assam turns no heads but a simple and aged intellectual when asks the government to not force the Bill and leave the people of Assam to themselves, he is being taunted as a traitor. This clearly states the dual character of the present government as neither the State nor the Central government took any action against the powerful MP but targeted a simple but highly educated man like Hiren Gohain for trying to protect the existence of Assamese culture and heritage.
In an exclusive phone conversation, Hiren Gohain responded to the case by saying that he is shocked to hear the news and reiterated that he never spoke anything that would have labelled him as a traitor and would have affected the peace and democracy of this country in any way.
A suo-moto case with the case number 120(B)/121/123/124(A) has been registered by the Police that labelled the noted intellectual and KMSS Leader Akhil Gogoi as ‘traitors’ for questioning the government’s role in implementing the proposed controversial Citizenship (amendment) Bill, 2016 in Assam and urging for as sovereign state.
Have we reached a time where once a peaceful Assam is now turning into a State operated by modern day dictatorship? Is the government going to do everything possible to grab anyone by their neck if they fulfil their ‘Right to Speech’ and freedom of expression? Hard times have arrived for the people of the mighty Brahmaputra as voices are now being suppressed at the very instinct of criticism of the government with intolerance reaching new heights.
