The opposition on Monday staged a protest against the ruling BJP government over the hooch tragedy in Golaghat district of Assam during the ongoing session at the Vidhan Sabha session.
Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia, MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi and other party members protested against the tragic incident in the house holding placards and sloganeering against the BJP government. They have further asked the ruling administration to resign and step down from their posts.
Addressing the media outside the house, Tarun Gogoi said: “The BJP government is solely responsible for such tragic incidents and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not yet addressed the issue. There are involvements of the Excise, Finance and Administration Departments in this syndicate. The Government has issued the licence to the illicit liquor dealers and it has resulted in such a large number of deaths in the state.”
It may be mentioned that the hooch tragedy in Assam has claimed the lives of 167 people and the death toll continues to rise as per latest reports. The incident that took place in the state’s Golaghat and Jorhat districts is the biggest such incident of its kind. It is to be mentioned that a similar ‘hooch’ tragedy had earlier claimed 136 lives in Gujarat in July 2009.
