GUWAHATI: Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT) and the Gifu University of Japan awarded the first batch of the Joint International Master’s Programme in Food Science and Technology, yesterday.

This award ceremony was organised at Gifu University, Japan, in the virtual presence of Professor. T. G. Sitharam, director, Professor. S. K. Kakoty, deputy director, IIT Guwahati, Prof. Chitralekha Mahanta, dean, academic affairs, Professor. Mihir Purkait, dean, Alumni and external relations, and other dignitaries.

Ms. Yume Saito, Ms. Ayaka Tsuchiya, Ms. Haruka Maruyama, and Mr. Tatsushi Aoyagi, completed their graduation in November 2019 as a part of this programme.

Addressing the gathering Virtually Professor. T. G. Sitharam, said, “This is a historic moment for both IIT Guwahati and Gifu University, as our joint vision, dedication, and partnership to develop this Joint Degree Program has finally yielded results.”.

He then congratulated the four graduates and all the faculty members involved, in making this programme a huge success.

He said, “These programmes can now serve as a model for all future joint degree programmes. The high quality of studies and papers that have come out of this programme so far, as well as the quality of students, faculty, and researchers, will ensure that we become role models in terms of operating an effective international collaboration programme.”

Professor. Hisataka Moriwaki, president, Gifu University also congratulated both the Institutes and wished the graduating class success in the future. He was accompanied by Professor. Fumiiaki Suzuki, Gifu University Fellow.

“This was a milestone for both the institutions,” adding this Professor. S. K. Kakoty wished all the students and stakeholders involved in this programme a success.

Prof. Chitralekha Mahanta, said, “The Joint Degree Program's course and content, as well as Japanese students' stay at IIT Guwahati, have enhanced their knowledge and understanding of not only their academic field but also of the life and culture of Indians in general and Assames in particular.”

“This academic and cultural exchange will continue to promote and enhance the ties between our two institutions and our countries,” Mahanta added.

Students from the graduating class also talked about their experiences with the programme and their visit to IIT Guwahati and expressed their hope that more Japanese students would follow their lead in choosing a course.

IIT Guwahati and Gifu University have collaborated to offer the Joint International Master’s Programme in April 2019 to nurture highly-skilled professionals in the food and related industries.
