Guwahati: A man in Assam's Hailakandi district who was suspected to be an illegal immigrant died of cardiac arrested even before he could prove that he was a genuine citizen of the country.
The deceased has been identified as Sukdev Ree (65) who belongs to a tea tribe of the Mohanpur area of the district. As per reports, the man was arrested back in 2016. He was named in a case in 2012 and based on that particular case, he was arrested on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant.
However, in 2020, he was released from the detention camp after a Supreme Court of India directive. The Gauhati High Court had recently directed the Foreigners' Tribunal to hear Ree's case on December 3 as the HC had found that certain documents submitted by him as sufficient evidence but before Ree could prove his citizenship, he passed away of cardiac arrest.
His wife had alleged that her husband was harassed by lawyers when he went for the hearings related to the case.
