GUWAHATI: The Indian army has refuted a media report published by a Guwahati-based website that claimed that the former had tortured a civilian in Ledo town in the Tinsukia district of Assam.
On July 25, the website reported a case of alleged torture of an individual named Rangan Hakhun, a resident of Malugaon near Ledo.
In a statement to the media, the Indian Army said, “After thorough internal investigations and joint fact-finding with the Assam Police, Indian Army refutes the claims and clarifies that the alleged torture by troops of Indian Army is false and baseless.”
This is also substantiated by the factually incorrect details mentioned in the report as no unit of Rajputana Rifles is currently deployed at Jagun Post, as mentioned in the media report reads the statement.

The Indian Army also requested Rangan Hakhun along with his son, son of the Gaun Burha (village headman), and other members of his village to come to Jagun Army Camp to confirm claims made in the media report.
In his statement to the media, the individual has stated that he was not picked up by Indian Army troops and he was not tortured in the camp as claimed.
“This seems to be an act of false reporting in an attempt to malign the image of the Indian Army due to the pressure on the insurgent outfits operating in the region and the goodwill that the Indian Army has earned amongst the locals. Investigations are still underway to pinpoint the individual/ organisation on whose behest the false narrative has been published.” It stated.
