Reiterating their stand against any acts of violence committed against the doctor community, the Assam unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), on September 1, condemned the killing of a doctor, Deden Dutta, by Assam Tea Garden Workers in Teok, Assam.
The Assam Branch of the IMA, in a release stated "As a mark of protest against the gruesome incidences and no convictions in previous cases, failure on the part of the Government to provide security to the doctors and showing our solidarity, IMA Assam State Branch most hesitantly calls for "24 hours withdrawal of medical services excluding emergency by doctors all over the state from 6 am of 3rd September to 6 am of 4th September, 2019."
The doctors' organization also sought the Government to take exemplary fasttrack punishment to the culprits.
Deben Dutta, a 73-year-old doctor from Assam, died after an enraged mob of tea garden workers brutally thrashed him and damaged the property of a hospital in Teok, Jorhat.
The incident took place following the death of a 37-year-old female tea garden worker, Samara Majhi, who was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
According to reports, the 73-year-old doctor was flogged inhumanely and the workers also damaged the hospital property in rage.
The workers alleged that the incident was a result of the doctor’s negligent attitude towards their co-worker, whose death, they feel, could have been averted.
The Police, reportedly, rescued the doctor from the hospital around 4 pm. He was critically injured and referred to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries.
