'Jatiya Nayak' Sarbananda Sonowal Silent as Assam University Fills Posts with Professors from Bengalregistrar

Guwahati, September 22, 2019:

Asom Sangrami Mancha's Working President Adip Phukan on Sunday drew attention to the fact that the Assam University is receiving a new batch of Professors and Assistant Professors, all from Kolkata!

Phukan took to social media platform Facebook and urged Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, to intervene in the matter.

While talking to Inside Northeast, he said that since the Assam University was a result of the Assam Agitation, it would be insulting to the movement's martyrs to fill the posts with non-Assamese Professors. "I believe the Chief Minister should hold discussions and deliberations with the University authorities, and find a solution. Situations like these might cause tensions between the Assamese and Bengalis to flare up", Adip Phukan warned.

In his Facebook post directed at the Assam CM, Phukan said that although the Assam University in Silchar was born out of the Assam Agitation, the latest round of interviews for 40 teaching posts are being held in Kolkata. "Our question is, why?", he asked.

Further adding that other Universities conduct screenings and interviews in their States, Adip Phukan asked Sonowal why the Assam University was not following the norm.

"Has the leader named Sarbananda Sonowal, who would roar in anger at any sign of injustice to Assam, gone quiet after becoming Chief Minister?", queried Phukan, and further urged the CM not to 'disappoint' the people of the State.

It may be mentioned here that Assam University, which is one of the premier institutions of higher learning in the State, came into existence in 1994 after enactment of the Assam ( Central) University Act 1989.
