Guwahati, January 16, 2019:

Assam’s ‘Jatiya Nayak’ Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal made the headlines when he finally broke his silence over the ongoing situations of Assam.

While addressing a crowd at the Sadou Nagaon Bhogali Bihu Utsav in Nagaon’s Neherubali on Tuesday, Jatiya Nayak Sonowal said, “I have not become CM because of lust for power, rather, I am here due to my responsibility towards the people of Assam. I will never betray my people. I respect the ethics of All Assam Students Union (AASU). I started my career there. I vow to fight till my last breath to save the jati (community).

Speaking on the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, Sonowal stated that he would not betray the trust of the people of Assam.

Sonowal also expressed the concerns regarding the implementation of the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord and urged the people to keep faith on the government. “None of the erstwhile governments have ever attempted to implement it, but now are trying to disrupt our government in doing so”, said the CM, slamming the opposition.

It may be mentioned that at the time when the whole state is up in arms with protests and seeking answers regarding the threat to indigenous community of Assam if the Bill is passed, CM Sonowal just assured the people of Assam that he will save the jati.

The jati destroying Citizenship Bill was passed at the Lok Sabha on January 8, 2019. While the Assamese people are still protesting against the amendment of the Bill as it may be raised in the Rajya Sabha session on 31st January.
