Guwahati: Senior bureaucrat Jishnu Barua has officially taken over as the Chief Secretary of Assam from Kumar Sanjay Krishna. Barua officially took charge as the Chief Secretary of the state at a ceremony held in Guwahati that was also attended by Kumar Sanjay Krishna.

Jishnu Barua, an IAS Officer, was formerly in charge of Home & Political, Revenue & DM secretariat administration (archives) and Border Protection & Development, and Implementation of Assam Accord departments.

Kumar Sanjay Krishna, a 1985 batch IAS officer, took over as the Chief Secretary in December of 2019. During his tenure, Sanjay Krishna had to deal with the treat of the COVID-19 pandemic after it landed on our shores.

Lockdowns, unlocks, and other COVID-19 related measures became the order of the day during the latter part of the former Chief Secretary's tenure. Now, the pandemic's impact on the lives of citizens has significantly reduced. Assam Finance, Health, and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today revealed that in spite of the Durga Puja celebrations -- marked by festive gatherings -- the COVID-19 positivity rate in the state is lingering around the 2% mark.
