New Delhi, December 21, 2019:

Students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) are planning to gherao the Assam Bhavan in the national capital New Delhi on Monday, demanding the release of peasant leader Akhil Gogoi, who has been sent to 10-days' NIA custody.

Speaking to Inside Northeast, Himadree Sonowal, the SIS-Councillor of JNU, said "Our first demand is scrapping of the amendment of the Citizenship Act, and the UAPA."

Sonowal also informed that students from other Universities, such as the Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi University students might also join the protest. "It is mainly organized by the JNU Students' Union, but we have also informed the other Universities, and they might join in", Sonowal added.

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Gogoi, who has been sent to 10 days in NIA custody, was picked up in Jorhat on Monday and transferred to Guwahati via aircraft. The NIA has filed three cases against Gogoi: under 120 (B)/124(A), 153(A)/153(B), and 18/39 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, becoming the first person to be booked under the Act since it was amended.

Meanwhile, protests against the controversial Bill-turned-Act are gaining in momentum across the country, even as the Narendra Modi-helmed Union Government has beefed up security in the national capital to stomp out the protests. Moreover, internet and metro services have also been temporarily suspended amid the raging protests.
