Justice Ranjan Gogoi is likely to be appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). Chief Justice Dipak Misra, who retires on superannuation on October 2 next, is likely to name Gogoi as his successor.
As per practice, the CJI names the senior most judge of the Supreme Court as his successor. After Justice Misra, Justice Gogoi is the senior most judge of the Supreme Court.
The name of Justice Gogoi, who hails from Assam, has been doing the rounds ever since four senior-most judges, including him, had held an unprecedented press conference against the CJI a few months ago.
