The overwhelming floods which have swept the Kaziranga National Park is still a great matter of concern for the animals as more than 70% of the area is still submerged under water, which is causing a great threat to the wild inhabitants of the National Park.
In search of a safe place, the animals are habitually running towards the western Karbi-Anglong hills, which further imperils their lives as they have to cross the National Highway 37 to get there.
In such a scenario, rescue operations need to be conducted to save their lives. The forest department is trying their best to tackle this major concern, but it is impossible to make it happen without the help of the locals and the community.
Thus, the locals of Kaziranga National Park area have sprung into action to save the animals.
The locals are headed by the renowned wildlife-activist Manoj Gogoi (of 'The Man Speaks to Nature...' fame), who is currently involved with the Corbett Foundation, and locals Leknath Sarmah and Nikita Bora.
Gogoi is associated with the Corbett Foundation and has rescued more than 5,000 animals till date. During this flood alone, he has saved more than 40 animals affected by the floods in Kaziranga.
Speaking to Inside Northeast, local Leknath Sarmah said: "Yesterday, we went to Bagori and Kohora for rescue operations. We rescued a male hog deer, and three snakes. The water has receded so the rescue calls are getting less frequent. It is actually a positive sight. Animals are born wild, and thus, we wish we did not have to rescue them, but sometimes it becomes a necessity. We also implore people to drive carefully as the animals of Kaziranga. We have rescued as many as 40 animals up until now and the operations will continue for the foreseeable future..."
