The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) notification 2020 is set to replace and alter the existing 2006 EIA by modifying many of its clauses. Concerned people and domain experts allege that it deviates from the Environment (Protection) 1986 and international commitments. As such, civil society and students over the country have been raising their voice against the amendment.

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) opposed against the draft EIA and raised few concerns regarding. On a press meet, KMSS said, PM Narendra Modi has given draft EIA 2020 notification but what's in there? How will it affect the Northeast? PM Modi govt has resorted to anti-state activities because they have given resources to the corporates and try to colour with communal fascism. The KMSS and SMSS can never accept this. All strategic sectors have been given to industrialists and they have also created panic because of the Corona. No Indian should accept this".

The organisation then further stated about the loopholes of the Draft EIA. "We are trying to raise how PM Modi is trying to sell our resource to outsiders. If the draft EIA is passed as an act, our resources will go into the hands of the others. By August 11 we have time to reply to the mail ID regarding our views".

KMSS then explained the problem areas it finds in the draft. "The most dangerous thing is the facility of ex post facto clearance proposal, which means currently if someone has to set up a factory, they had to take prior permission from govt. But now this clearance will allow functioning without prior permission. So after starting work, they can now take permission, this is really dangerous. The 206 notification had a public hearing notice period for 30 days, even though the process was difficult and fair. Now, the 2020 notification is even dangerous as the 30 days reduced to 20 days".
