Guwahati (Assam), Aug 31, 2018:

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samitee (KMSS) on Friday staged sit-in protests at several places in the state against the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project at Gerukamukh in Lakhimpur district.

The protestors said if the dam at Gerukamukh project is allowed to be constructed, it will cause devastation. The construction work of the project has remained suspended for some time now in the wake of protests by KMSS and other organisations.

The protestors vented their ire against the BJP for its volte-face.

“Back in 2014 ahead of Lok Sabha election, Rajnath Singh (who is now Union Home Minister) had promised that BJP would dismantle the project if voted to power. They are in power now but they say the country needs the project for development. We condemn the BJP for deviating from its earlier stand and hoodwinking the people of Assam,” a protestor in Guwahati said.

The protests were also staged in Dibrugarh and Dhubri. The protestors also demanded that the flood in Assam be declared as a “national problem”.
