BAKSA: All Bodoland Minority Students' Union (ABMSU) activists today staged a massive protest in demand of justice for its slain president Lafikul Islam Ahmed, who was gunned four years ago on this day.
Ahmed, a popular minority students’ leader and fierce critic of the current BJP led governmen, was killed in broad daylight by an unidentified person on August 1 last year. Initially, the case was being handled by the state police and a special investigation team (SIT) was formed to investigate the matter. But after protests by the ABMSU, the matter was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Two motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire from an AK-47 rifle at Ahmed while he had gone to buy tiles at a shop in Titaguri Market, killing him on the spot and seriously injuring the shopkeeper, Superintendent of Police Rajen Singh said. Police found three empty AK-47 cartridges from the spot.
Taison Hussein, the General Secretary of the ABMSU, questioned the failure to nab the bulprits despite Assam's present chief minister (and then Minister) Himanta Biswa Sarma's promises to ensure justice ahead of the elections in the Bodo Council last year.

Before the Council polls, Biswa Sarma extensively toured the region and asserted in rallies that Lafikul Islam was killed for "political reasons" and that the killers would be arrested.

"Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced that the CBI had identified the killer and that he would be arrested if the BJP was elected to power. The BJP has come to power in the BTC, and the party came to power with Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Minister. However, Lafikul Islam's killer was not arrested and nothing was made public. The CBI did not file a charge sheet, not did it
Alleging that Dr. Biswa Sarma is aware of the killer's identity, the ABMSU leader questioned why he has not been arrested yet. He further questioned whether the CBI has been asked to hide the killer's identity.
Failure to nab the murderers of Lafikul Islam will result in the ABMSU resorting to road bloackades, he further warned.
