Lovlina Borgohain keeps Tokyo dream alive; one win away from confirming medal

GUWAHATI: Lovlina Borgohain brought cheer to the country on an otherwise disappointing day at the Tokyo Olympics.

The first woman boxer from Assam at the Games impressed mightily against the experienced Germany pugilist Nadine Apetz at the Kokugikan Arena on Tuesday.

With the win by a split decision over the senior boxer, Lovlina moved into the quarter-final of the Women’s Welterweight division (64 to 69kg). Lovlina won all three rounds on split points.

She is now just a win away from sealing a medal for India. If she moves to the semi-finalists, she will be assured of at least a bronze in the sport at the Games.

The 35-year-old Apetz was the first German woman to qualify for a boxing event at the Olympics and also a two-time world championship bronze-medallist and a former European champion.
