SIVASAGAR: Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, the former General Secretary of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), who rose to national prominence during the statewide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, is officially starting his political career today as he has been chosen as the President of the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP).

The regional party, which was formed after regional superpowers All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) took an initiative following popular public demand for an alternative political solution, is getting its final shape at a two-day conference in Sivasagar. The AJP was born after committee of prominent personalities of the State, which was formed by the AASU and AJYCP, suggested measures for dealing with the crucial issues concerning the people. However, the AASU leadership has asserted that the apex students' body would maintain its apolitical nature.

"Although the AASU and AJYCP took the initiative to form the AJP, and former student leaders can join politics and bring about solutions to our problems, the AASU will always remain an apolitical force," said Sankar Jyoti Baruah, the current General Secretary of the AASU.

Prominent personalities from different walks of life as well as nonpolitical organizations and regional political parties have been invited to be a part of the 2-day Conference.

Yesterday, Lurin Jyoti Gogoi confirmed to the media that he will be joining the AJP and working to resolve 'regional issues.'
