DULIAJAN: Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, the General Secretary of the All Assam Students' Union, who was one of the most prominent faces during the agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act towards the end of 2019, yesterday resigned from his post. Sankar Jyoti Baruah will now take charge as the new General Secretary of the All Assam Students Union (AASU), Inside Northeast sources have informed.

Moments after announcing his resignation, a teary-eyed Lurin Jyoti Gogoi said, "I am not making a sacrifice. After looking at the situation that is unfolding in Assam, I wish to ensure that there is justice. An atmosphere of fear has currently overtaken Assam."

It has been speculated that Lurin will contest the ensuing Assam Assembly polls in 2021 on an Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) ticket.

Upon being asked whether he is going to join active politics after his resignation, Lurin told Inside Northeast, "I will announce my decision shortly.

Another AASU leader -- Dipanka Nath -- who had also floated the possiblity of joining active politics during the agitation against the 'CAA' -- will also resign from active politics.

Meanwhile, adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya, who had also said that he would resign from the student body -- said that he would re-think his decision to quit after repeated pleas from the body's members to stay on.

The decision towards this end was taken following several amendments of the constitution of the student body on Saturday last.

As per the new amendments to the constitution, any AASU member or leader who crosses 40 years will have to retire from the organization.
