GUWAHATI: A day after Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha branded the Sarbananda Sonowal government as “fascist”, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi today took to Twitter to echo the same sentiment over denial of bail to jailed peasant leader Akhil Gogoi.
“The continuous incarceration of #AkhilGogoi in spite of an unanimous public opinion, demanding his release, reflects the #fascist mentality of this govt. Its time the #AssamGovt wakes up and realises that subjugation of anti-CAA voices won't work. #ReleaseAkhilGogoi @RaijorDal,” tweeted the former All Assam Studdents’ Union (AASU) general secretary.
The state government in particular and the BJP in general have been facing severe criticism from various quarters after the Gauhati High Court on Thursday rejected the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader’s bail plea.

Gogoi, who was arrested on December 12, 2019, on sedition charges, has since been jailed. The state police as well as the National Investigation Agency have slapped several other charges as well on the fiery leader who has been spearheading an anti-big dam movement in Assam for over half a decade.
Chaliha on Thursday called Sonowal a “coward” and his government a “fascist”. He dared Sonowal’s government to free Gogoi and face the firebrand leader in a political battle in the ensuing Assembly elections. According Gogoi’s aides, he is likely to contest from Sivasagar on a ticket from Raijor Dal, a newly floated political party backed by the KMSS.

Both AJP and Raijor Dal have been floated with a common agendum to dethrone the BJP in Assam following the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019.
Various organisations supporting Raijor Dal had on Thursday threatened a massive agitation demanding Gogoi’s release once the party’s first state convention gets over at Moran on Saturday. There have already been massive social media campaigns demanding release of Gogoi.
