RANGIA/MORAN: Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Saturday hinted at an imminent alliance of all regional political parties in the state ahead of the Assembly polls in March-April.

Talking to newspersons on the sidelines of a Kamrup district AJP joining conclave at Rangia, Gogoi said a conclusion would be arrived at just before or after the Magh Bihu.

“We are in talks with all regional forces which are not allied with any national political party. Most of the regional parties have realised how the national parties are bullying them one after another. Those were crystal clear in the recent Bodoland Territorial Council and Tiwa Autonomous Council polls. Therefore, we are expecting to give you the good news of a grand alliance of regional forces just before or after the Bihu,” Gogoi said.

Earlier, addressing the gathering of hundreds of party workers, he said: “The ruling government has been trying to buy votes introducing schemes after schemes. But, the strategy is not going to work any more. The people of the state have realised that all national parties are alike as far as dealing with regional interests are concerned. Therefore, I am sure the people will give mandate for a government of regional forces in 2021.”

He also took a dig at the development claims by state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stating that the plight of the healthcare sector just outside Guwahati speaks volumes about the hollow claims of the government.

Asked about Sarma branding All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) as a political force for its support to the AJP, Gogoi said: “There were similar assumptions in 1985 as well when the AASU backed the Asom Gana Parishad. But, the AASU remain apolitical after that. AASU is an apolitical organization and will remain so in its character. This time also the AASU will remain apolitical.”

On Friday, Gogoi lashed out at Sarma’s remark that the candidates of AJP will forfeit their security deposits during the state Assembly elections. He was in who was at Dabaka.

About the Congress-All India United Democratic Front alliance, Gogoi said the national parties have created such a situation in Assam that it is time for all to stage a united fightback cutting across religious, communal, linguistic, caste and creed lines. “Nobody can achieve anything fighting in isolated small groups. It’s time for a united fightback,” he remarked.
