GOALPARA: A group of unknown miscreants have vandalised a 20 years old statue of the nation's father Mahatma Gandhi in Assam's Goalapara district.

The six feet statue is located in the BOC point of the Goalpara town.

The hate crime has sparked outrage among the public, who have demanded that the Criminal Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigate the incident as soon as possible.

Locals said the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was torn down on July 26.

Speaking to InsideNE, locals said that such incidents occur frequently in the area, but because no Closed-circuit television CCTV cameras were installed, the miscreants were able to flee easily.

Therefore, locals have so demanded the quick installation of CCTV cameras in the area.

"Despite the tight security in the area, how can miscreants ter down a statue ?", asked a local.

The investigation on the matter is underway and no arrests have been made so far.
