A man allegedly committed suicide as the names of three of his family members did not figure in the complete draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) published last week.
The family members of Deben Barman of Golokganj in Dhubri district found his body hanging from a tree outside his residence on Tuesday morning. The names of his son Mahendra, grandson Kishan and granddaughter Mousumi were not included in NRC.
The locals said the deceased slipped into depression and later, became mentally-unstable on learning about the trio not making it to the NRC list.
“The panic surrounding NRC is obvious. As this is a backward area, the government should have taken sufficient measures to create awareness among people on NRC and the opportunity given to people, who missed out, to file claims and objections for inclusion of their names in the draft,” a local told reporters.
Desi Yuva Prishad, Asom chief Jahangir Hussain Ahmed claimed the deceased was a genuine Indian. The district authorities said they would probe the death.
