Several people sustained injuries, including five policemen, following clashes between supporters of All Koch Rajbongshi Sanmelani and the police at Chautara near Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district on Monday.
Thousands of activists of Sanmelani had descended at Chautara railway station to impose a 12-hour rail blockade in support of a separate Kamatapur State, besides demanding inclusion of Koch Rajbongshis in Scheduled Tribe list.
Running of several long distance trains have been affected as most of them have been controlled, two diverted and two others cancelled.
The police had to resort to lathi-charge and firing of teargas shells to break up the protesters, in which seven persons were hurt. The protesters became violent and attacked media and police vehicles too, in which five vehicles were damaged.
At least 18 protesters have been taken into custody.
