MATERNAL MORTALITY RATE AND INFANT MORTALITY RATE DECLINE IN ASSAMATE

The state Assembly was informed that the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) is 44 per one lakh live births and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is 300 per 1000 live births in Assam. In reply to a question by Numal Momin of BJP, Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that MMR in the state has been declining since 2001-03 when it was registered as 490. The MMR further declined to 480 during 2004-06, 390 during 2007-09 and 328 during 2010-12, he said. The IMR has also fallen during the period from 74 in 2001 to 44 in 2016, Sarma added.

Strategies implemented to reduce IMR in the state include Facility Based New Born Care, New Born Care Corner, New Born Stabilisation Unit, Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre, Nutritional Counselling and Management Centre, Paediatric Intensive Care Units and Home Based Newborn Care, the minister said.
