The state of Assam observed “May Day” following a local holiday for all the government offices and educational institutions. Workmen across Assam observed it today, demanding better working conditions and pay benefits for the working class people.
The workers of BSNL Employees Association, All India Railwaymans Employees Confederation, and Brahmaputra Carbon Uddyog workers Union in Bongaigaon celebrated the day well.
In Tinsukia too, the Dumduma Hindustan Liver Limited (P.P.F) Workers' Union celebrated the labour day with the workers of the organization.
May 1 is observed as the “Labour Day” or “May Day” across the world. It was first observed in 1886, to honour the struggles of workers around the world, celebrating the working class. Perhaps the first May Day celebrations in India were in 1923, in the city then called Madras, with the leader of the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan, Singaravelar, holding meetings near the Madras High Court and at Triplicane Beach. In Assam, former Chief Minister Golap Borbora is said to have organized it for the first time.
