After Assam, Meghalaya too has been hit hard by the floods caused due to incessant rains in the hill state. As per official date, at least 1.14 lakh people have been affected in Meghalaya due to rising waters of two rivers.

The rising rivers have flooded the plains of West Garo Hills district due to seven days ceaseless rain across the whole state.

A projected no of 57,700 people, residents of 50 villages in Demdema block and over 66,400, residents of 104 villages in Selsella block have been affected due to the floods in West Garo hills.

Rising waters of the Brahmaputra and the Jinjiram rivers, both flowing from Assam, submerged the low-lying areas of the district. Moreover, the state's capital city Shillong has also been flooded.

Efforts are on to evacuate the flood victims and take them to safer locations and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has also conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas.

The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district, M W Nongbri said that: “A flood-like situation was created in the low-lying areas of the city”.

Meanwhile, the MLA of Selsella, F C A Sangma os constantly monitoring the condition and informing people of the situation. Arrangements are also being made to provide relief materials to the flood-affected people of the state.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma took to Twitter to inform people about the flood problem in the state. He wrote: "Incessant rains and backwaters from Brahmaputra has flooded plain areas of West Garo Hills. Floods have inundated nearly 140 villages and approximately 110000 population. Emergency services are pressed in to services."
