Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy has landed in the soup for drawing parallels between India and the despotic regime of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Roy, in a public meeting, has been quoted as saying thus: “Those who do not want divisive democracy shall go to North Korea.”

Roy’s comments have stoked the fires of amid the furor over the Citizenship Amendment Act, where tensions between various communities have already reached its peak. Moreover, Roy’s insinuation that democracy is inherently divisive has sparked a major debate as the communal undertones of his remark could add further fuel to the fire, amid rising volatility in the region.

Taking swift action against the Meghalaya Governor for his incendiary remark, the Central Government has sent him on ‘leave’. Consequently, Meghalaya Governor R N Ravi has taking additional charge as the Governor of Meghalaya.

It may be mentioned here that the unrest over the C(A)A, that was initially felt in the Northeastern states, has now spread like a wildfire to major cities, including national capital New Delhi.

The unrest over the C(A)A has also spread to major cities such as Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Lucknow, where activists have taken to the streets demanding the withdrawal of the contentious Act.
