Aizawl, April 19, 2019:

Derek C Lalchhanhima from Sairang, Mizoram, who made headlines all over the world is winning even more accolades. The story of the six-year-old child went viral all over the world after it was posted on Facebook by user 'Sanga Says'. The post immediately gained the attention of the media and was shared over 70,000 times on Facebook by users of the social media platform!

Now, almost a month later after he wowed the world with his compassion, Derek has been awarded by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) as they have announced to award him with the highly esteemed 'Compassionate Kid' award.

Derek blew up social media on 5 April after a photo went viral in which the kid was seen holding the injured chick in one hand and a ten rupee note in his other hand which was outstretched. The story behind this picture is a rather interesting one. The kid, Derek, had run a chick over with his bike and took it to his father who told him to take the chick to the hospital. Derek took the chick and his savings of rupees ten to the hospital, where a nurse clicked the picture.

The next day, Derek was appreciated at his school with a certificate. Derek's story is one which put smiles on many people's faces and the child is deservedly getting this attention.

It may be mentioned that PETA India’s Compassionate Citizen programme is specially designed to help students between the ages of 8 and 12 better understand and appreciate animals.
