MLA Shiladitya's Effigies Burned for His 'Communal' Statements

Tinsukia, August 22, 2019:

The All Assam Muslim Youth Students' Parishad on Thursday burned the effigies of controversial Hojai MLA Shiladitya Dev in protest against his 'communal statements'. The Sukanpukhuri chapter of the student body burned the effigies of the MLA in Thana Chariali area in Tinsukia district.

A protestor said, "We are incredibly saddened by  MLA Shiladitya's statement in which he had said that Assam will soon become the land of Ajmal and Azaan. Thus, we have decided to protest the MLA and have burned his effigies in protest."

Shiladitya, who is no stranger to controversy, has recent come under public scrutiny for his statements on the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC), to be published on August 31. He has repeatedly attacked Prateek Hajela, the Co-Ordinator of the NRC, terming the whole process as a 'one man show'.

Furthermore, Shiladitya has drawn flak from the Muslim community for alleging that many 'Bangaldeshi Muslims' are intentionally being inserted into the NRC. He has also resolved to take 'action' if all the alleged foreign nationals are not deported by November. Recently, he said that if Tarun Gogoi had not been sitting hand-in-arms for 30 years, the NRC proceedings would have begun sooner, and it would never have gone to the Supreme Court. "

The Assam Accord was signed in 1985, but the NRC process started in 2005 at the directives of the Supreme Court", he had said.

“It is rather unfortunate that the NRC has become a ‘one man show’ because of the Congress’ apathy towards the NRC”, he said, taking a dig at the NEC Co-ordinator Prateek Hajela. The MLA also said that he will take the initiative to ensure that Bangladeshis are booted out after the ‘crisis period’ during the months of September October.
