Mobile concerts planned in Mizoram to raise funds for Myanmarese refugees

Aizawl: Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the apex student body in Mizoram, will today organise a candlelight vigil to pay tributes to protesters of Myanmar who were killed in the military crackdown. The vigil will be held at Vanapa Hall in Aizawl from 7 pm onwards.

On Saturday, mobile concerts will be organised at various places to raise funds for Myanmarese refugees residing in the state.

The organisation expressed “ its deep concern and strongly condemns this ongoing violence against peaceful protesters and the continuing violation of the fundamental human rights of the people of Myanmar."

Last month, the MZP staged a sit-in-demonstration in protest against human right violation by Myanmar army and to extend solidarity to the Mizo communities in Myanmar.

Mizoram shares a 404-km international border with Myanmar and many ethnic Mizos live in that country, who share the same culture with the Mizo communities in Mizoram.

The United Nations on Monday said at least 138 peaceful protesters have been killed in Myanmar since the Feb 1 military coup.

It may be mentioned that the Union Home Ministry had warned four States bordering Myanmar, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh to take measures to prevent refugees from entering the country except on humanitarian grounds.

Earlier this month, Myanmar asked India to return the police officers who crossed the border.

India shares a 1,643-kilometer border with Myanmar, and is home to thousands of refugees from Myanmar in different States.

The Myanmar coup began on the early morning of February 1 this year when democratically elected members of Myanmar’s ruling party, the National League for Democracy, were deposed by the Tatmadaw Myanmar’s military which vested power in a stratocracy.
