In a significant remark, Rajya Sabha Member Biswajit Daimary has said Assam was never free from the influence of Islam and hence nobody should be bothered even if a Muslim person becomes a Chief Minister.
The comment assumes significance in the backdrop of BJP MLA from Hojai Shiladitya Deb’s prediction that Assam would have Dhubri MP and All India United Democratic Front chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal as Chief Minister by 2026 owing to “alarming rise” in the population of Muslims.
He further added that by that time, 56 of Assam’s 126 Assembly constituencies would be “dominated” by people belonging to the Muslim community.
In response to Deb’s comment, Daimary retorted that Assam was always a pluralistic society, hence anybody can become Chief Minister of the State.
The Rajya Sabha MP also clarified that National Register of Citizens being updated in Assam was not about any community, as was being made out by some.
