Dhubri, June 29, 2019:

In a successful counter insurgency operation in Assam’s Dhubri district Dhubri police and the Indian Army have jointly arrested a Muslim Fundamental Organisation/Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MFO/MULTA) cadre in an early morning operation on Saturday.

A police team led by SI Satyajit Borthakur, comprising of ASI Safeequl Khan and eight other constables alongwith a team of the Indian Army recovered one 7.62 mm rifle alongwith other arms and ammunition from the ceiling of the cadre's house.

The police also said that the joint team acted based on available inputs regarding the cadre.

The cadre has been identified as Abed Ali and is a resident of Shilairpar village in Dhubri district of Assam.

The individual has been handed over to Gauripur Police Station for further investigations.

It may be mentioned that the Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA) is an Islamist extremist organization founded around 1996 in the eastern Indian state of Assams.

The South Asia Terrorism Portal (satp.org) describes it as part of the All Muslim United Liberation Forum of Assam (AMULFA), and that Muslim United Liberation Front of Assam (MULFA) is a sister organization under the AMULFA umbrella.

According to Indian authorities, the organization is tied to terrorist operations and criminal activity throughout Assam, primarily in Dhubri district, but also in Nagaon, Morigaon and Darrang districts.

It sells weapons illegally, and conducts kidnapping and extortion to fund its activities.
