Sivasagar (Assam), September 3, 2018:

A navy diving team of the Eastern Navy Command has been brought to trace five members of a family who went ‘missing’ after they ‘drowned’ into the Dikhow River in Sivasagar along with their vehicle on September 1.

The Addition Director General of Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, "A 10-member navy diving team from Visakhapatnam has been airlifted at the request of district administration for assisting the rescue operation. The Indian Navy team will help the NDRF and SDRF teams to locate the family. The rescue team comprises of 35 deep divers and the team has informed that the water deep down has very low visibility. Moreover, we are seeking help from IIT for the ground penetration radar but that is not transportable. So we are trying to get equipped with such devices for future incidents."

It may be mentioned that 14 divers of the Army Special Force under the Spear Corps based in Dimapur, are already on the site. They are carrying out operations in the area. Defense personnel informed, “The river is nearly 100 feet deep at some edges and wide with strong currents, making the search a slow and deliberate process. Due to the recent rains, the water has become muddy which is also delaying the search. Personnel of NDRF & local villagers are also assisting the Army in the search operation.” [sic]

It may be mentioned that on September 1 a Guwahati-based businessman and all four other members of his family were reported missing after their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into Dikhow river near Gaurisagar in Sivasagar district.

The persons reported missing were businessman Haren Bora, his wife Phunu Bora, mother Panou Bora and daughters Chimpi Bora and Munmi Bora. The incident occurred on Saturday evening when the family was returning to Guwahati. Bora went to Sivasagar along with his family members to visit his parental home. The site of the mishap was about one and half a kilometer away. The family is from Beltola area of Guwahati.
