Udalguri, March 9, 2020:
Ending 34 long years of insurgency, the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) finally disbanded itself in Udalguri today. With this announcement, the Dhiren Boro faction, Ranjan Daimary faction and B Saoraigwra faction ended their armed struggle.
The organisation which was the signatory of Bodo Peace Accord was disbanded at Sonai designated camp in Udalguri. All the factions of the NDFB except Gobinda Basumatary’s (Progressive) group were present at the disbandment ceremony. “Since NDFB has signed the agreement, we have to implement its clauses. Therefore, we have disbanded the organisation,” said NDFB leader Dhiren Boro, while addressing the media.
A joint statement signed by Dhiren Boro, ex-president of NDFB (D), B. Ohnjalu, ex-general secretary of NDFB (RD) and B Saoraigwra, ex-president of NDFB (S), read: "the arms struggle has come to an end after the peace agreement." “It was a 34 year long struggle. It was not easy. I have become emotional today. Now our challenge is to rehabilitate our members. I hope, government will take steps for rehabilitaion,” said NDFB leader B Saoraigwra. Founded as Bodo Security Force on October 3, 1986 under Ranjan Daimary, the separatist outfit renamed itself as NDFB on November 25, 1994. Meanwhile, the disbanding of the group hints at the members' eyeing an active role in politics.
Meanwhile, Gobinda Basumatary, the leader of the Progressive faction, has already joined the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) that has thrown down the gauntlet in a bid to topple the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) Government.
