Shillong, July 30, 2019:
Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) Convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday visited the residence of Meghalaya Speaker Donkupar Roy to pay his last respects to the senior Meghalaya politician.
He was also accompanied by current Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People's Party (NPP) leader Conrad K Sangma.
Taking to Twitter, the NEDA Convenor wrote: "Visited the family of Late Dr Donkupar Roy at data-query-source="hashtag_click">#Shillong along with Meghalaya CM Sri " data-mentioned-user-id="3258071491">@SangmaConrad We paid homage to departed soul. He shall always be remembered for his political legacy & constructive public life. May Dr Roy's family & friends gain strength to bear the loss."
The state funeral of Dr Donkupar Roy, who passed away on Sunday, will be held at Sohra on July 31. The Burial will be at Shella on the same day.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has offered his condolences to the departed leader, whom he referred to as a "mentor".
A statement released by the Meghalaya Chief Minister read: “With profound grief and sorrow, I deeply mourn the sad and sudden demise of Donkupar Roy, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and elected member of Shella Legislative Assembly Constituency, who passed away on the 28th of July 2019. With his passing away today, the State has lost a great leader who had dedicated his life for the service of the people. His demise is a huge loss for the State. In this moment of grief and mourning, I on behalf of myself, the Government and the people of Meghalaya, convey our sincere and deepest condolences to all members of the bereaved family, friends and his close associates and pray that God Almighty grant them the strength and solace to be able to bear this irreparable loss. I wish the departed soul an eternal peace.”
