As many as six workers are missing after a pipe of the Kapili Hydro Power project burst in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. The pipe of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited’s (NEEPCO) Kapili Hydro Power project broke on Monday morning at Umrangso. Many workers were stranded after the pipe broke, and six are still reported to be missing.

A delegation of the NEEPCO will be visiting the site today to investigate the matter.
The pipe was repaired in 2018, but continued functioning without regular inspection. It supplied around 12,000 litres of water per second to the Kapili Hydro Power project from NEEPCO reservoir. The Kapili Hydro Power project generates 200 megawatt of power.
After the pipe broke, the spray of water rose up to 50 meter high, and resulted in a power cut and massive flood in the entire region.

The incident led to injuries of many people in the area. Located on the River Kapili in the Dima Hasao District of Assam, the Kapili Hydro Electric Project was the maiden venture of NEEPCO, when it came into existence in 1976.
