Guwahati commuters can breathe a sigh of relief after their pleas for mode of transportation across the Brahmaputra as officials have announced that two ferries are to be introduced along the route.
This comes after an incident on September 5 this year when a mechanized boat carrying almost forty passengers had capsized, shaking the entire region. After this incident, locals had been demanding authorities for full time ferry services instead of accident-prone mechanized boats.
The new services will start from the beginning of 2019. According to reports, the hi-tech ferries, manufactured at a cost of Rs. 2 crores apiece, will cover the distance from open bank of the river to the other within 6 to 7 minutes (approx.) The ferries will also have GPRS location tracking service.
