The Assam Government has issued a new set of lockdown guidelines for Guwahati allowing some specified activities from July 5th to July 12th, 2020. The complete lockdown was enforced in the city on June 28th, 2020 midnight for 14 days to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.

Guwahati has witnessed a sudden surge in COVID-19 cases of late. Most of them have no travel history. Guwahati registered 195 COVID-19 cases on June 28th, 172 on June 29th, 380 on June 30th, 378 cases on July 1st, 238 cases on July 2nd and 134 on July 3rd, 2020 Assam has crossed the 1000-mark in 60 days. It reported the first case on March 31st, 2020.

The guidelines

  • Grocery shops are allowed to operate between 11 AM and 4 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays ( 6th & 8th July 2020) However. Deputy Commissioner shall issue requisite directives to ensure that only 20% of all shops are allowed to open on any given day. Shopkeepers and customers shall have to wear masks, hand gloves, and maintain social distancing. Responsibility of maintenance of social distancing will be on the shop owner and failure to do NO will be viewed very seriously and may entail summary closure of defaulting shops. Maintenance of price line and prevention of artificial shortage will be the responsibility of shop keepers and Food. Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department;
  • Whole sellers of grocery items are allowed to replenish stocks of retailers on Sunday (5th July 2020) and Tuesday (7th July 2020) between 3 PM and 6 PM. No retail sale is allowed in this period;
  • Activities relating to essential items supply from and to FCI establishments shall be allowed to operate FCI will ensure that social distancing is maintained while loading/ unloading of goods and that vehicles carrying goods to outside of the District proceed to destinations without any stoppage inside the Kamrup Metropolitan District under any circumstances,
  • House to house sale of fruits and vegetables shall be allowed between 8 AM and 2 PM on Monday and Wednesday (6th and 8th July 2020);
  • Activities relating to wholesale distribution of medicines and medical equipment shall be allowed between 10 AM and 3 PM only on Monday and Wednesday( 6th & 8th July 2020) ;
  • Veterinary clinics, veterinary medicine shops are allowed to operate on all days between 10 AM and 4 PM. Feed shops are allowed to operate on Monday (6th July 2020) and Wednesday (8th July 2020);
  • E-commerce distribution activities are allowed between 11 AM and 4 PM on Friday (10th July 2020) only;
  • Post Offices and Life Insurance Corporation offices are allowed to operate with only 10% of total employee strength and only 10 % of total branches,

However, the order has clearly mentioned that no roadside vending of any fruit, vegetable. fish etc will be allowed.
