The Anti-Corruption Bureau of Assam Police caught a Sub-Divisional Officer red-handed while accepting a bribe in Chirang district in Assam. The incident took place at Kajalgaon in Chirang district.

The SDO (civil) has been identified as Jayanta Sarkar. He was caught red-handed by an ACB team led by Superintendent of Police YT Gyatso while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant Dhananjay Barman.

As per information, the accused had demanded bribe of Rs. 1 lakh from the complainant to give a favourable order in favour of Barman and his wife in matters relating to the case registered at Sidli Police Station relating to a Samaboy Sanitizer.

The private civil driver Sushanta Roy Chowdhury was also called for questioning and his hand wash was also taken which turned pink indicating that he too had handled the bribe money which was handed over to him by the complainant as per the instruction of accused public servant..

The arrested accused – Jayant Sarkar and his civil driver Sushanta Roy Chowdhury will be forwarded to the Special Court at Guwahati on May 29th, 2020.

In March 2020, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Barpeta police was arrested red-handed while accepting bribe by the sleuths of ACB recently. Madhab Kalita, stationed at Barpeta police station, had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 for submitting a final report in connection with the case registered against the complainant.

As to ACB, the complainant, Diganta Das, had approached the ACB police station in the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, to register a complaint against the accused for demanding bribe.

Based on the complaint, a case (number 03/2020) was registered under section 7 (a) of PC Act (as amended in 2018) against the accused and a trap was set-up to catch him.

In February last, Narayan Chandra Dey, an Executive Engineer with the Public Works Department, was arrested by the ACB sleuths in Tezpur in Assam for allegedly seeking a bribe from an electrical contractor.

The bribe money of Rs. 40,000 was seized from the possession of the accused by the ACB team. The accused had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs. 50,000 for approving a bill regarding the electrical work done by the contractor at Tezpur and Biswanath Chariali Civil Hospital.
