Guwahati (Assam), September 14, 2018:

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has eliminated all unmanned level crossings in the zone.

The NFR in a press statement said, “NFR has taken a quantum jump towards safety by eliminating all unmanned level crossings through various means.”

The statement said there were 151 unmanned level crossings in NFR zone as on April 1, 2018 but out of them, 136 were eliminated by converting them to manned crossings, ten by construction of road under bridges and five were closed down.

The statement added, “NFR becomes one of the first railways to achieve this target ahead of the stipulated time. Unmanned level crossings are considered one of the weakest links in the safety preparedness of Indian Railways as a considerable percentage of accidents have occurred due to carelessness of road users at these unguarded crossings. This is the reason why NFR had targeted the elimination of unmanned level crossings on mission mode.”
