Assam: COVID-19 in police stations, 12 cops quarantined

As many as 12 police personnel attached to the Hatigaon police station in Guwahati, Assam, were quarantined after a detainee was tested positive for COVID-19.

The accused, Gagan Rajbongshi, was arrested on June 9^th, 2020 on allegations of him stealing gas cylinder and sent to Guwahati Central Jail on June 10^th, 2020. Later, he was shifted to Tezpur jail.

“His sample was tested positive for the COVID-19 on June 13^th, 2020,” said Biren Deka, the Officer-in-charge of aforementioned police station.

The entire police station was sanitized and police personnel were quarantined at the Hotel Lily, located at Six Mile in Guwahati.

Meanwhile, a sub-inspector of the Panbazar Police in Guwahati, Assam was tested positive of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on June 13^th, 2020. He was in quarantine at the Vishwaratna Hotel for the past four days after he claimed that he was not feeling well.

Confirming it, the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, Munna Prasad Gupta said, “All the precautionary measures have been taken adhering to the Centre’s guideline to contain the spread of the virus. The police personnel have been quarantined.”

It may be mentioned that on June 12^th, 2020, three doctors were detected positive for the virus at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

COVID-19 scenario

The Kamrup (Metro) district has registered a total of 552 confirmed COVID-19 cases; of which 216 are active, 329 have been cured and discharged and four died due to the infection, according to the data provided by the Government of Assam.

A total of 207 people have been tested positive for COVID-19 on June 13^th, 2020 in Assam. With this, the number of total cases has gone up to 3900.

Of the 3900 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 2084 are active and 1805 have been cured and discharged while nine died due to the infection.

Informing this, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted:

Assam has crossed the 1000-mark in 60 days. It reported the first case on March 31st, 2020.
