Guwahati, January 12, 2020:

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today turned down talks with Union Home Minister Amit Shah citing the imposition of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) on Assam.

AASU Chief Adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said that since the central government has officially imposed CAA in the state of Assam despite relentless protests of the people, it was decided that the talks with Shah be skipped.

“They issued a notification implementing the CAA. So, we don’t think it is necessary to attend the meeting with Amit Shah,” he said. However, the members of the committee, constituted to discuss implementing of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, have flown for the Sunday meeting.

It may be mentioned here that Clause 6 provides for constitutional safeguards to the Assamese people. Bhattacharya said, “We have to get this Constitutional safeguard. We don’t want the central government to bargain in case of CAA and Clause 6.”

It may be mentioned here that the Centre had requested the Clause 6 Committee, comprising fourteen members, to submit its report in January to allay fears over CAA. But the anti-CAA brigade has made it clear that Clause 6 safeguards have nothing to do with CAA.
