NRC Cut-Off Year Must be Revised to 1951, 'Final NRC' Should be Scrapped: APW President Aabhijeet Sharma

Assam Public Works (APW) leader Aabhijeet Sharma, has demanded that the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list, that was published on August 31, must be scrapped completely.

While speaking to Inside Northeast, the APW President expressed his dissatisfaction with the final version of the NRC. Sharma also expressed the desire for a revised cut-off date of 1951. "We must remove the year '1971' from our minds completely, and set 1951 as the new cut-off date", Sharma said.

"Of the 19 lakh who have been named, many are indigenous sons of the soil. Thus, only about one lakh people's names will be eventually omitted from the list. If only one lakh illegals are in Assam now, the number must have been insignificant during the days of the Assam Movement, which left 855 braves martyred. Did they lay down their lives because of only 5-6 Bangladeshis?", Aabhijeet Sharma charged.

Furthermore, he raised the alarm about the inclusion of jihadis in the list. "Since illegals are there, jihadis from Bangaldesh too must have been included", he said, and demanded an NIA investigation into the matter.

In regards to the astronomical sum of Rs. 1,600 crores being spent on the NRC, he said that much of it was usurped by corrupt officials. Sharma also demanded an investigation into the same, and also threatened to reveal the details of where the money had gone in the upcoming days. "We want the people who are responsible for the malapropriation of funds behind bars", he said.
