Guwahati, May 9, 2019:

Assam's former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday alleged that the exclusion of lakhs of people from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is as per the directions of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and said that the Central Government and the State Government is lacking the enthusiasm to finish the NRC proceedings.

Addressing the media at Congress headquarters at Guwahati Rajiv Bhawan, Tarun Gogoi said that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is lacking in interest towards the fag end of the proceedings of the NRC despite so many problems arising in the state regarding this.

“Even the Home Minister has put any effort even after knowing that this is the first ever NRC in the country. And if any misconduct is being recorded in the completion of the NRC, the entire proceedings in the country will fail," he added.

He alleged that the NRC process is being carried out as directed by the RSS and as a result of this, lakhs of people have been excluded from the NRC.

Lakhs of people have been facing harassment in the name of the proceeding regarding the claims and objections as they have to travel from far-flung distances to attend the hearing.

Questioning the exclusion of 40 lakh people in the NRC draft, Gogoi said that the Final draft of the NRC that is to be released by July 31 will not be correct. He further added that although no one can deny that there are immigrants living in the state, there is no way to ascertain that all 40 lakh are foreigners.

The former CM also said that the Bharatiya Janata Party is, on one hand, trying to implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and on the other, they are implementing NRC, so which will be followed remains to be seen, said Gogoi.
