Guwahati, November 1, 2018:

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed claimants seeking to include their names in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to rely on all 15 documents.

Hearing the case, a two-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, also extended the deadline for filing of claims and objections for inclusion of names in NRC from November 25 to December 15, 2018.

The five documents which were earlier kept in abeyance were NRC of 1951, voters’ list between 1966 and 1971, refugee registration certificate till 1971, ration card and certified copies of pre-1971 electoral roll, particularly those issued from the state of Tripura.

NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela had earlier urged the apex court to drop the five documents from NRC modalities. The court directed him to make the process of claims and objections strict.
