TEZPUR: The first case of the new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, has reportedly been detected in Assam, reports said.
A man who reportedly travelled in from Saudi Arabia, has tested positive for the new variant in the state’s Sonitpur district, said reports circulating in some sections of media.
However, the Tezpur Medical College has denied these reports and dismissed it as a "rumour."
The patient has been admitted at Tezpur Medical College.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has advised against suddenly introducing a third Covid vaccine dose or recommending any change in the time gap of Covishield shots in the wake of Omicron cases. Meanwhile, India logged 7,774 new Covid-19 cases and 306 deaths on Sunday.
The principal concerns about omicron include whether it is more infectious or severe than other VoCs and whether it can circumvent vaccine protection.
More to come...
