Assam’s 60 organisations met in Guwahati on Sunday to chalk out their future course of actions against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The organisations discussed at length as to how they could take the protests forward across the state and the country.
Emerging from the meeting held at the Sudmerson Hall of Cotton State University, RTI activist and leader of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, Akhil Gogoi, said some very important proposals were made by the participants at the meeting.
“There was a proposal to stage a fast-unto-death stir in Delhi to let the world know about the Assamese people’s stand against the Citizenship Bill. The nation was united a few years ago during Anna Hazare’s fast- unto-death stir at the Ramlila ground. We want to unite people like that. Similarly, the day the bill will be raised in the Parliament, we want to stage a massive protest in Delhi. As per the proposals, the various organisations will gherao Dispur on November 16. Subsequently, there will be a gana satyagraha,” Gogoi said.
A number of intellectuals had attended the meeting. Hiren Gohain said the Narendra Modi government wanted to pass the Citizenship Bill as a part of its vote-bank politics.
