GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Thursday took the decision to withdraw the controversial clause 5 of state boards' evaluation criteria which stated that mark sheets prepared based on internal assessment will not be valid for government jobs.
Reacting to the decision, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who has been consistently raising the issue, said that this is 'an example of how people can benefit from parties in opposition'.
Gogoi has been vocal about the matter demanding the state government to clear the air of confusion as the future of the students' depend on the decisions.

"It’s mental harassment on the students as the state government has failed to implement new criteria like other states", Gogoi had said earlier.
“Other states have conducted examinations successfully. Those states have shown concern over the future of the students. What happened in here?” he questioned.
There have been lots of agreements and disagreements on conducting board examinations in the state as well as deciding upon the evaluation criteria. The 'indecisiveness' and 'vagueness' about the decisions brewed confusions among students
Finally on Thursday, the state government cleared the clouds by scrapping the clause 5.
"After Assam Congress raised this issue consistently the Chief Minister has taken a U-turn on his own statement", added Gogoi taking a dig at Himanta Biswa Sarma.
"A reminder to colleagues who think that being in power is the only way to serve the people", he added.
Gogoi had earlier accused the BJP government in the state of being power hungry and having no concern for COVID and examinations.
Seconding Gogoi, APCC President Ripun Bora too had slammed the state government for 'double standards' and fickleness in making decisions regarding board exams.
Based on the decisons taken on Thursday, there won’t be any rank this time but the students will get distinction marks. The Chief Minister also said that it is yet to decide on conducting examination for the posts of teachers.
