'People Will Lose Faith in Police After Sanaullah Episode': Biswajit Daimary(L) Daimary; (R) Sanaullah

Guwahati, June 9, 2019:

Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary has expressed his opinions on the 'Sanaullah episode' which shook the entire nation to its very core when a veteran of the Kargil War, Mohammed Sanaullah, was declared a "foreigner" and thrown in a detention camp.

Speaking exclusively to Inside Northeast, Daimary has said that the incident is most "unfortunate" and "should never have happened". Daimary has also said that the situation could have been avoided had the authorities tried to ascertain the Kargil war veteran's identity before packing him off to the detention centre.

"The investigating officer had said that Sanaullah was arrested as per the Tribunal Court, but he had never met him. But he had met the person against whom the case was registered and he was a daily-wage labourer. But they did not hear Sanullah's cries when he said that he was an army man", Daimary said.

Daimary has said that instead of sending him to the detention centre, they should have confirmed that the Sanaullah in custody was really the one accused in the case.

He has also said that an enquiry should be initiated to find out how such a mega blunder came to pass that an ex-army man and a police man was termed a "foreigner". Biswajit Daimary also said that strict action should be taken against the personnel who committed this mistake so that such blunders are not committed again.

"After this incident, the people will lose their faith in the police force. People will think that the police are inefficient, and act as per their whims", the Rajya Sabha MP lamented.

"People will think that the police intentionally do these these goof-ups to harass the people", he said.

Meanwhile, Sanaullah who was released from the detention camp on Saturday, has thanked the Guwahati High Court for granting him bail.

On Saturday, Sanaullah was released from a detention centre in Guwahati, a day after he was granted bail against a bail bond of Rs 20000, two local sureties and his biometrics.
